What To Consider When Planning: A Tented Wedding

Tented weddings give the couple an opportunity to really take their own visions and work from there. Tents are an empty canvas ready to be painted by the vision created by the couple. Tented weddings are, by far, my favorite weddings. As a planner you may feel like a general contractor building a home because there are so many things to consider when planning a tented wedding.

When you consider a tented wedding the cost of these types of weddings are usually more expensive than the ballroom wedding or destination wedding.

The following are some of the areas to consider:

1. Parking situation
2. Location of the septic system
3. Rain contingency plan
4. Sound ordinance of the area and don’t forget town permits
5. Level land
6. Bathroom situation
7. Power hookup
8. Lighting of the event site and surrounding areas
9. Bug spraying the land

Each tent should be treated as a separate entity from the existing house because most clients don’t want people walking in and out of the house.

My biggest challenge for a tent installation was a campground in the woods of Maine - where I had no running water or electricity. We literally had to build the site from ground up and bring in water tanker trucks to support the event, along with generators and pathway lighting to get the guests from point A to point B without getting hurt.

Tented weddings give freedom to the couple with design, themes, and other details. You don’t have to worry about an ugly wall color. You can choose any theme and put it under a gorgeous clear-top tent, which is great for stargazing. Tackling the scary tented weddings can be a handful, but knowing the things I’ve mentioned earlier will definitely help with the research. These weddings are always beautiful and stunning, and will probably always be my favorite.

For me a wedding has all the same motions: bride wears a white dress, walks down the aisle, marries her groom, goes to a party and ends
with eating cake and dancing. That is the typical wedding. How do you make your wedding memorable? It’s all in the details. It might be cliché, but it is very true that people appreciate the small things in life.

I find it important for the couple to always add touches that make the wedding their own. The details can be put into any area of the wedding that the couple feels is more important to them. Some of my clients are foodies so they put more detail into food presentation; others want décor to be what I call the “Wow!” factor. A wow factor is simple; it makes your guests go, “Wow!”

It does not matter how big your budget is, you can still have a wow factor. Some clients I meet with love the DIY little projects where they make the favors together, and those are things your guests appreciate.

For this couple, the décor was the wow factor. With beautiful linens, we didn’t’ want the centerpieces to take away from amazing linens, but instead we wanted the centerpieces to compliment them. We had topiaries made to tie in their color scheme: green, yellow, and white.

A nice little detail, we had white chivari chairs for the guests, and put a matching chair cover only on the bride and groom’s chairs. We also had hand-written table numbers. I cannot stress enough that when planning your wedding, stay true you and your fiancé’s visions.

Get Married at a Gallery

Ok, this isn't a formal gallery of art but it has enough artifacts to be! And the owner does actually own galleries.

There are not many places for American citizens to go without a passport, obviously anywhere in the United States is fine, but it may not occur to many that Puerto Rico counts as U.S. territory. This means it’s an easy travel place for U.S. citizens: no customs!

When in Puerto Rico, there are many things to see and do, but my favorite spot is Old San Juan. This area attracts many tourists because of its old-world, classic feeling. At the end of Old San Juan, beyond the ancient fort, at the top of the hill, and overlooking the ocean sits a hidden yet exquisite inn: The Gallery Inn.

You are greeted at a wrought iron gate and as you walk through an open corridor filled with antiques, this setting transports you into an unknown era. Every piece in this Inn was hand picked by the owners to enhance their collection of fine art as well as showcase them. I fell in love with every detail of this place. It's hard to tell you about how this place makes you feel, so I'm including many photos that can help me say this.

The view is spectacular from the roof deck. For dinner, you can enjoy delicious tapas outside on the roof garden. The artifacts, paintings, and statues are unique and intriguing. The bedrooms are impeccably decorated and fit for royalty.

If you are considering an intimate wedding this is the best place. They can accommodate a small wedding or a large cocktail party. Your guests and you can enjoy everything the Gallery Inn has to offer. With the attention to detail, this place makes you feel at home (Fun fact: this boutique inn is the owner’s home).

The owner has her own kiln, which she uses to make all the dishes for the inn. She even makes custom chargers for the wedding.

Hidden Jewel of the Caribbean

I love when clients choose exotic destinations for their weddings because it gives everyone an added sense of great adventures. Iceland is a fantastic choice for any couple who loves hiking and cooler weather. However, the warmer destinations can be just as exotic and intriguing.

A true jewel of the Caribbean is the tiny island of Canouan. While this island isn’t the easiest to get to, you might have to take 2 or 3 flights depending on where you are coming from, it is a beautiful place to host a wedding.

It’s part of St. Vincent & the Grenadines and sits below Barbados, which is where you fly to and take a smaller plane to Canouan. This island is not very well known, not even my Word spell-check thinks it exists, underlining Canouan with that red line!

But this place exists, even if it you feel like you are in a dream while you are there! In the green mountains and valleys of the gorgeous island, sits the beautiful Canouan Resort that has breathtaking views of the bright blue water.

This resort is appealing to any couple because they can accommodate from a small getaway up to about 100 guests. The suites and villas add a touch luxury for this relaxing environment.

My favorite thing about this resort is the feeling I get when I’m there: complete calmness. There is a Zen tone to this property. If you want to relax and sit in the sun all day, go ahead! For those who want to play golf, there is an 18-hole championship, which happens to be part of the Trump International Golf Club. The views from each hole vary, but they are all spectacular.

One of my favorite features of this resort is their 17th century chapel. This is perfect for couples who want to host the ceremony there instead of the beach.

The resort has an amazing pool that it boasts as the largest in the Caribbean where you can host amazing cocktail parties. There are other options for cocktails; they have three restaurants that are all great spaces. You can even maybe host a party on the golf course.

The world-class spa is amazing. You can take the tram up the mountain to the individual treatment bungalows or take a boat out to the water and have a spa treatment in one of the huts sitting in the ocean.

The best way I can put this, is that it’s a tropical paradise that makes you feel like you have arrived in Bali but with less jet lag. It is certainly one of my favorites!

An Estate Tucked into the Hills of New Jersey...

I recently got to enjoy a wonderful tour of this amazing estate known as Natirar, in the gorgeous rolling hills of New Jersey. Most people are probably thinking, “Oh no! New Jersey?!” But this estate will make your jaw drop with breathtaking views and completely change those horrible stereotypes of New Jersey’s settings. This estate is fit for a king, and was even owned by one years ago.

While this place is still transforming, they want to add accommodations and a spa is in the works plus so much more, there is a restaurant that you can arrange for a delectable dinner.
“From Farm to Table…” is the mantra of this amazing restaurant. The Club at Natirar is a perfect location to host a rehearsal dinner or cooking classes.The farm to table concept comes from the practice of gardening and using organic foods. Natirar is set against 411 rolling acres, and was also once the home to the King of Morocco. Sir Richard Branson, of Virgin Atlantic, recently has become a part owner of this estate.

The estate is the venue to host large private events, from weddings to corporate events. Walking through the mansion and onto the patio, you will see the rolling hills of Somerset County- home to horse country in New Jersey. Cocktails can be held on this terrace followed by dinner in the enclosed, climate-controlled tent. In order to maximize the use of the estate, they have attached a permanent tent structure to the property, which sits on top of the hill, for the best view.

The size of the tent can accommodate approximately 300 people for a seated dinner. This tent has a draped ceiling ready for the client to create their vision and paint a picture of their perfect wedding day.

Once the tour had ended, we were treated to the most amazing meal that I have enjoyed in a long time. This estate has so much character and history, and now there is an added flair of innovation. Because of the work that has gone into giving this property a “face-lift,” keep an eye as this becoming a great spot for New York City brides who want that elegant wedding among hills and valleys.

Getting Married in Bermuda? My pick...

The wonderful patio that wraps around this room is perfect to host a sunset cocktail hour and dinner inside this all-windowed room allows the nighttime to fall and still see the glistening of the island lights.

For weddings, the ceremony can take place on the pink sand beaches to the terrace of the Windows on the Sound dining room overlooking the vista of the Atlantic Ocean. Or host your ceremony on the deck of the Waterlot and let the sunset be your backdrop. Share a kiss under the traditional Moongate - native to Bermuda.

Bermuda offers you a wonderful destination that is only 1.5 - 2 hours from NYC. You can get to Bermuda in the summer faster than you get to the Hamptons in Long Island ....

This island is a true gem off the East’s coast.

Love and Luxury in Lake Como

This adventure really starts with flying from New York to Milan… look out your window as you approach Northern Italy and you are greeted by the peaks of the Swiss Alps, which is truly breathtaking. The snow- capped mountains are as far as the eye can see. Landing in Milan is a treat in itself because it’s a fashion capital for Europe.

As I collected my luggage, I got into a car and made my way to Lake Como to stay at Villa D’Este. The views are spectacular here. Not only because Lake Como sits near the Alps, but the architecture of this place is amazing.

Villa D’Este sits on the banks of one of the most romantic lakes in the world and just north of Milan; this amazing hotel was built in 1568 as the summer residence of Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio. The property sits on 25 acres of manicured gardens.

The Veranda restaurant overlooks the Lake and the gardens. It is formal and elegant. Glassed-in or al fresco, windows are automated and can disappear into the ground creating an amazing venue for dinner.
Whether you are in a classic or a suite, you will feel like royalty the brocade silk curtains and artwork on the walls, make you feel like you are a queen for a day. I was most impressed with the amazing vaulted ceiling hallway that led to the steps to the rooms in the main building... For those couple who want to splurge on luxury over seas, this is my number 1 choice!

Villa D’Este treats their guests like royalty. The food is great and so is the staff. The manicured gardens are a perfect place to host a ceremony. There is a terrace that overlooks Lake Como that can only be described as breathtaking. This can be used for cocktails or intimate dining/reception area. The terrace view looks beyond the lake and you will see the Swiss Alps in the distance, which is a short drive away, one can buy the best Swiss Chocolate in the world.

Their dining rooms overlook the gardens and terrace that offer equally breathtaking views of the area. We enjoyed a wonderful meal that featured the best risotto I have ever tasted following by braised short ribs cooked in a wonderful Chianti sauce.

Once you see your bedroom, you will feel like a king and queen. As you enter the rooms your mouth will drop in awe at the majestic feel to the room- the oversized bed features a fabric silk canopy that just invites you to fall onto the bed. The living area and the view makes you want to stay in your room.

As you venture into the region - you will enter the wonderful town square for amazing gelato and visit the Duomo in town - perfect place to host a ceremony.

As you sit by the terrace and feel the sunshine, swim in the floating pool that sits on the lake - and as you venture on to the lake via boat, wave at George Clooney's villa that sits next to Villa D'Este.

The Plaza is the Place to Be...

The Plaza has provided the location many motion pictures such as: The Way We Were, The Great Gatsby, Barefoot in the Park, Funny Girl, Cotton Club, Crocodile Dundee I and II, and Home Alone II: Lost In New-York. Designated a New York City Landmark in 1969, The Plaza is listed on the Register of Historic Places and the only New York City hotel to be designated as a National Historic Landmark.

And one must not forget the Famous Oak Room. The Oak Room, New York’s fabled landmark, is now open in The Plaza Hotel. It is the most romantic meeting spot in New York City and bringing old-world glamour to the next generation. The Oak Room closed during Prohibition and re-opened in 1934 as a full service restaurant. The Oak Room’s wood-paneled walls and barrel-vaulted ceiling remain today.

The Plaza Hotel is such a great spot to host a memorable wedding or event. This is the perfect place for any bride who wants a touch of chic royalty while still being in the heart of the city that never sleeps.

"Sempre Amore" in Santa Caterina, Amalfi

Italy is the country that is home to a romantic language, food, and people. Located in the amazing seaside town of Amalfi, sits a hotel high on the bluff called Santa Caterina. This family-owned hotel offers guests luxurious comfort with amazing views of the Amalfi seaside village.

One of the best meals, from being in Ravello, Sorrento, Rome and Amalfi, we had was at their restaurant with award-winning cuisine. I was served the most amazing stuffed zucchini blossoms I have ever tasted. I also tried this homemade ravioli dish with the most delicious lemon alfredo sauce. Honestly, if we could have licked the plate, we would have!

For a romantic night a great dinner is key but amazing scenery always helps. The glass enclosed restaurant overlooks the glittering lights of the seaside village below. The wrap around terrace for breakfast is awe-inspiring.

The hand-painted mosaic-tiled floor invites you to a lobby filled with smiling staff who are all quick to help you find a great local restaurant or tour of the area.

The rooms are well appointed, with the suites that are larger than most rooms in the states. Many rooms have patios and balconies all overlooking the ocean. The bridal villa is this little retreat tucked away from the main hotel. It has a private infinity pool, duplex apartment with lower level sitting room and an upstairs bedroom, truly one of the most romantic little hideaways I have ever seen.

The Al Mare Restaurant at the lower level of the hotel is accessible by riding a glass elevator, through the mountain to the bottom of the mountain. There, the doors open to a grotto feeling area and then you enter the pool deck where the Al Mare Restaurant is nestled amongst lemon trees.

Cocktail can be hosted on the terrace and reception can be hosted in either the Al Mare Restaurant or the upstairs dining, next to the terrace. I’ve worked in Italy many times, and this would be my choice as a venue to use for your cocktail and reception if you are staying in Amalfi.

Cabo, Mexico is the Place to Go

Esperanza is a world-class resort that offers their guests amazing accommodations, award-winning, Mediterranean-influenced cuisine and embodies the relaxed lifestyle of the Baja Peninsula. Tequila tasting is great, too!

This magical setting offers amazing ocean views. Esperanza is a place that really finds it important for any event to reflect each couple. The open-area terrace can comfortably hold 100 guests. The backdrop from the ceremony area will take your breath away.

Travel and Leisure Magazine recently voted the Cabo Spa at Esperanza number 1 in Latin America. The spa offers 14 treatment rooms, a couple suite, and a large soaking pool. This relaxing experience will be remembered for a long time

My favorite thing about Cabo is where it is on this planet. Because it has a sub tropical climate, the weather pattern offers guests 350 days of sunshine, in a wonderful dry climate, that always gives ladies a wonderful hair day. The average temperature is mid 70's making it picture perfect weather for any wedding almost year round.

"I do" as the Romans do...

Along the Southern coast of Italy, in the mountains, sits the town of Amalfi. Everyone stayed at the five star luxury Hotel Santa Caterina, which has a breathtaking view and some great spots to host events. The couple hosted their welcome party there, and if it wasn’t booked on Saturday, they might have held their wedding there. This hotel’s service is impeccable; everyone is willing to help you.

We arranged a boat excursion to Sorrento (about an hour and half). While in Sorrento, guests had about 2 hours to shop and eat. We would suggest a little more time because there are great little shops and places to eat, but it all requires taking the time to walk around. You can also arrange for a mini bus to take guests who are not interested in taking the boat.

The couple got married in this beautiful church in Ravello (about a 15 minutes drive from Amalfi), the next town over. After they said their I do’s, they walked into the piazza as two guitarists led them and their guests up the path to Villa Cimbrone. This is probably my favorite thing that really shows the culture of the area.

Although walking up (and down) to get there can be bear for your older guests, it’s still a memorable place. For the older guests, there is a man that has a motorized chair to help them up and down, but it takes 20 minutes per way and only one person at a time. We also shipped flip flops for the ladies to change into for the walk-up and down.

Villa Cimbrone is this gorgeous venue that has a terrace with one of the best views, ever. Cocktails were held in the gardens nearby the terrace. The reception was held in the Villa’s crypt that is literally carved into the side of the mountain. The crypt has these gothic-style arches that give this area incredible drama.

It’s hard for me to describe this beauty of Italy in words. Even these photos don’t do it justice. Italy is one of my top three places for a destination wedding because the guests are excited to travel to Europe and we usually choose a place that most people have not been to. It’s easy to do a wedding in Rome, but traveling south to Amalfi, people get to see the countryside of Italy, as well as the mountains. It is nothing like Milan, Venice, Rome, Florence, or even Tuscany. This area has so much more character.

A Wedding Fit for a King and Queen

When I met Diana and Jimmy over a year ago, she was in the throws of pulling together the wedding of her dreams. As we began our journey together, we blended the couple’s love of Spain and wine into elements of the wedding.

The guests at this wedding were given a wine box, engraved with their monogram, filled with authentic Spanish rice, extra virgin olive oil, Romesco sauce, and even roasted almonds. This was perfect to set the mood for their theme.
With Oheka Castle as our backdrop, the ceremony was held on the lawn overlooking the manicured and grand gardens. The weather was divine and was even highlighted by cool unpredicted winds, courtesy of Hurricane Earl, sitting off the coast but never affecting our wedding.

A wonderful Spanish inspired cocktail hour followed the ceremony with an assortment of cheeses and meats from Spain, even a full roasted pig! The groom also provided a wonderful assortment of wines from Spain.

With the popular color scheme this fall being purple, which also happens to be the bride’s favorite color, we created bouquets and centerpieces using all the shades of purple (provided by Belle Fleur).

Guests always remember if the food was good and if the band got them up on the dance floor. Soul Solution band had the guests on their feet all night long. At our final band wrap-up-meeting, the couple noted that their family does not dance, but once Reggie played the first note, they were on the floor and remained that way all night long.

A wedding is only as good as their vendors they choose. It takes a great team to pull off a fabulous wedding, as well as capture it. I had the pleasure of working with amazing talent Matt Mendolssohn who provided these gorgeous photographs.

When asked by many, “Why do you plan weddings?” The answer is the end result--- the smile on the couples’ faces at the end of the night, and knowing that I had a part in helping them start on one of the greatest journeys of their lives.

Viceroy Anguilla: My new favorite spot

Having traveled to Anguilla for the past ten years, I always have found the people of Anguilla to be extraordinary. Now I can say that this island offers an extraordinary resort. Most people who know Anguilla know it for its famous 30+ beaches to visit. This tiny island is also known for having some of the best beaches in the world.

I'm very impressed with this new luxury hotel on the island known as Viceroy Anguilla. This resort is simply amazing. When you arrive and drive down the palm tree-lined driveway, you get a sense of peace, calmness, and balance. You enter this gorgeous lobby where friendly, smiling staff waits to welcome you to this oasis. As you pass through the lobby and head toward the water, the infinity pool offsets the Sunset Lounge. It is just breathtaking.

The spa is probably one of the best that I have seen in a long time. The rooms all overlook the water and offer amazing services that help you relax so much that you could just fall asleep. My favorite is the Swedish massage!Sit back and relax because you have arrived at a luxury property that will not only enhance the island but the Caribbean in general. The resort sets new standards for the term “luxury.” From the accommodations, to the food, to the service, Viceroy Anguilla has surpassed my expectations. The hotel has 3 amazing pools, including a family pool, each with different views of the property and island.

I think my favorite part of this resort is the dining experience. There are the three restaurants, all with the service and food being perfect. The main restaurant has air conditioning. I know that sounds like nothing, but a lot of restaurants in Caribbean in general lack this luxury. It makes for an enjoyable meal when the weather turns hot, humid, and sticky.

Whether your wedding is as small as two people or as large as 200, this resort can accommodate your needs.

If it was up to me and I had weather cooperating, I would have an ideal set up of the following: ceremony hosted on the beach, cocktails around the pool, and dinner and dancing in the (air conditioned) restaurant. You can even host an after party around the family pool.

If weather didn’t cooperate, the lobby makes for a breath-taking space to have your ceremony or any of the other restaurants, for that matter.

I’m all about having the idea of being flexible due to unplanned surprises like weather. To me, The Viceroy has the knowledge, the capability, and the staff to get things done. It also has chic décor with the major influences of rest and relaxation. Viceroy Anguilla is definitely one of my top ten places I would recommend to host a destination-wedding-weekend.

The Tides Riviera Maya, Mexico

Mexico is known as a great place to host any wedding. My favorite spots in Mexico include Los Cabos or the Playa del Carmen region. Two weeks ago I had a lovely couple host their wedding at a property called The Tides Riviera Maya. It is also a great location because it's an easy place for guests to get to. Many airlines service CUN (Cancun International Airport).

This Mayan inspired boutique resort is surrounded by tropical foliage. There is a path that leads guests to a reading area, a painting area, and a writing area, each located in it's own spot that offers peace and quiet. Guests have their own cassitas with a plunge pool, an indoor shower, an outdoor shower, and many things that really make you appreciate nature.

Although this is a small resort, because it's spread out, there is a great feeling of having your own space. Ideally if you are having 60-80 guests, I'd

encourage you buy out the property by taking over all of 32 cassitas.

The wedding recently hosted there had welcome cocktails around the Tequila Bar, rehearsal dinner on the beach, and cocktails and reception around the beautiful pool overlooking the beach. This resort also offers many options of places to have your ceremony, depending on the number of guests. The Tides also offers activities like a Mayan Cooking Class or a Tequila tasting event.

I would have to say my favorite thing about this resort was the natural beauty of it. Surrounded by the lush jungle, it offers a sense of calmness that is hard to find. It is very eco-friendly, which I still find to be a trend that many couples look for. The food was amazing. The staff was impeccable and always willing to help you with anything. Tides, I found the communication among the staff themselves was great. If someone couldn't give you an answer, they had "secret-service" style walkie-talkies and would get in touch with someone who could help.

Overall, if you are looking for an eco-friendly boutique resort that leaves your guests with a lasting impression, this place should be considered!

Grace Bay Club, Turks and Caicos

Most brides and grooms have a hard time picking locations due to flight patterns, but with Turks and Caicos, many airlines fly into Provinciales. Another great thing is that from the New York area the flight is about 3 hours.

When I arrived at Grace Bay Club, in Provinciales, Turks and Caicos, I was greeted with cold towels and rum punch. I was then introduced to my personal concierge. With personal concierge, you receive a local phone that connects you with your personal concierge at any time. This is something very special about Grace Bay Club.

Fuchsia, purple, and red Bougainvillea bushes surround this beachfront property. The beach is great to host your ceremony, cocktails and even dinner.The Grace Bay Club offers an extremely relaxing atmosphere.

My favorite spot on property is a multi-tiered lounge area with a great fire pit. At night it offers such a romantic scene with the fire pit on and tons of wooden lanterns hanging around.

This is in the same area as Grace Bay Club’s famous infinity bar that has a great view of the sunset.

Everything from the food, to the scenery, to the staff is great at Grace Bay Club. I’ve been around the world, and it’s hard to find a place that knows how to make every guest feel important, but not for Grace Bay Club.

Anguilla

Within the Caribbean, there are places that are so beautiful that you may think it’s a secret. Anguilla is definitely the hidden jewel of the Caribbean. As part of the British West Indies, Anguilla is about a 30-minute flight, east of San Juan, Puerto Rico. People usually fly into St. Martin and can a 30-minute take a boat to Anguilla. The island is 16 miles from end to end and a little more than 35 square miles in all, but this little island packs in over 30 beaches to tempt sun lovers, snorkelers, sailors, and scuba divers.

Anguilla offers an amazing resort known as Cap Juluca. It has many villas that were recently redecorated. I have done many weddings here and everything from the food to the staff is always great! Cap Juluca has everything from tennis courts to water sports to some fantastic restaurants right in its facilities.

This island has the best beaches I’ve ever seen. The sand is literally like white sugar. It’s soft on your feet and it glistens in the sun. Hosting a ceremony on the beach is absolutely amazing. On this island, there are also some of my favorite restaurants including Blanchards, which has wonderful island cuisine that has also been made into an amazing cookbook. There is also a local beachfront restaurant called Mango’s and fits about 100 people. This is a great option for rehearsal dinner or even a reception. They serve a variety of foods; I would say that it’s International cuisine.

Even though this island is smaller than most, it offers a luxurious and relaxing atmosphere that attracts many brides and grooms.

Round Hill Hotel and Villas, Jamaica

Jamaica is a country that offers not only a beautiful culture, but also has amazing sites to host your wedding. Round Hill Hotel and Villas is located on a bluff in Montego Bay. Guests may choose from oceanfront rooms in the Pineapple House (36 rooms) or 27 privately owned two, three, four and five bedroom villas. Most villas have a private pool. The villas also have a personal gardener and maid.

Round Hill is not just any other hotel in Jamaica. The décor is truly relaxing and “Old English” with a hint of old Hollywood. Ralph Lauren, who also vacations at Round Hill, inspired the design. Near the cocktail bar area of the resort there are black and white photos of people like Grace Kelly and even Jacqueline Kennedy vacationing there.

This quiet resort offers a fabulous spa with a pool that sits above the lawn overlooking the ocean. The lawn is an ideal spot for hosting a ceremony. Cocktails may even be hosted around the pool.

There are plenty of options of sties to host any of your parties. The beach can be a great spot for host rehearsal dinner with an amazing buffet and even a bonfire. My favorite spot to host rehearsal or reception can be on the beautiful patio, known as the Seaside Terrace (outside) or the Georgian Room (covered). Another one of my favorite spots to host the rehearsal or reception is lighting this outside stairway with candles that leads to the Dining Terrace (outside) or the Hanover Room (covered) which offers a breath-taking few of the sunset.

Round Hill also offers one of my favorite things: Tea Time. Your guests can enjoy scones and a variety of quality teas while enjoying the serenity of this resort.

Savor The Tastes From The Sugar Mill

Located right outside the walls of Half Moon Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica, there is one the best restaurants on the island, The Sugar Mill. As a part of the Half Moon Resort, The Sugar Mill not only offers a history lesson but also serves fantastic food. Upon arrival, you are greeted at the foot of this gigantic waterwheel “…that powered the 50,000 acres of the Running Gut sugar estate spreading from Rose Hall in the east to Little River in the west.”

Built in the 17^th century, this once sugar plantation is a fabulous option for a couple to host rehearsal dinners or even receptions, depending on the number of guests. You have the option to use main dining area that holds 140 persons.

On the lawn, in front of the waterwheel, you can entertain your guests as well. The Sugar Mill also offers the upper field-stone terrace. This area sits above the waterwheel and looks fantastic with long tables (as pictured in this article). The terrace offers an intimate setting that looks magical and easily seats fifty people.

My favorite meal offered here is the flaming shish kabob. It’s a freestanding shish kabob on a large skewer that includes meat and vegetables. When it arrives at your table, the server pours a flaming sauce on it. It is certainly entertaining and delicious!

This sugar plantation also shares land with the golf course where you can participate in “Night Golf.” This is truly an experience where you are given golf balls that are lit from within. The Sugar Mill also offers a tour of its wine cellar. Whether you are hosting a welcome cocktail party, a rehearsal dinner, or a reception, The Sugar Mill’s amazing food will captivate your taste buds!

Rafting down the Lethe River

After all the years I’ve been going to Jamaica, I recently returned with memories from one of the most amazing experiences. With about a 25-minute ride into the green mountains of Montego Bay, Jamaica, you reach an opening that leads you down sets of stairs to the Lethe River. This river runs about 2 miles long and also turns into the Great River.

When you arrive at the river, you see about 25 rafts. Each raft is handcrafted by your guide with bamboo and is about 10 ft long. Each raft has its own name as well! I boarded the Love Doctor and was pampered the entire way down the river.
My guide would park the raft along certain spots of the river, get out, run into the jungle, and return with things like limestone, flint rocks, Allspice, bamboo straws, and many more. In this situation, the guide used the limestone as a pumas stone and gave me a foot massage! He even climbed a tree to get a coconut, cut it open, and inserted the bamboo straw! These guides are quite fascinating men, and it’s amazing how much they know!

This experience is very similar to taking a gondola ride, except you are surrounded by lush greenery. It is an experience I definitely will suggest for wedding groups! It is relaxing, educational, and entertaining! Not to mention, after the rafting ride, you can setup rum tasting for your guests!

When a bride closes her eyes and sees her wedding in a place with lush greenery, near a beach, and in a country filled with amazing Caribbean culture, I would suggest she goes to Jamaica. This is one of my favorite spots for destination weddings. Fifteen minutes from the International airport in Montego Bay, there is Half Moon Resort.

More than just a hotel, Half Moon is the perfect place for your guests to be entertained, yet still enjoy some rest and relaxation. Whether the wedding is two people or 500 people, Half Moon can accommodate your wedding. The Romance department and staff go above and beyond to help execute the wedding of your dreams!

With chic rooms and villas overlooking the beach or gardens, great options for dining, golf, and a fantastic spa, this 400-acre site can entertain an entire wedding weekend. One of my favorite things about Half Moon is the fact that it sits on so much land but still feels like a boutique hotel.

This resort can be at 100% in capacity and you will still feel you are the only person there! This intimate feeling is a great tone for weddings.

If anyone has been to Jamaica, you know that you fall in love with the culture more than anything else. From the food to the attitude of the people to the music, everything about Jamaica is truly amazing! I’ve been coming to Jamaica for 20 years and this country truly knows how to the throw a great party. How can you resist an island whose motto is “One Love?”

Beautiful By Nature: The Somerset on Grace Bay

Located on one of the most beautiful beaches with clear, turquoise water, the island of Turks and Caicos has one of my favorite hotels: The Somerset on Grace Bay. As a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, The Somerset truly gives you and your guests the attention you all deserve.

When planning a destination wedding, it is important to keep in mind the distance to this destination as well as ease of traveling for your guests. Turks and Caicos is great because of its location. From the east coast, there is a direct flight from JFK into Providenciales.

The Somerset on Grace Bay is about 15 minutes from the International airport.

Because this location has a boutique style and size, it is more appealing to couples who are looking to have an intimate wedding with about 50-80 guests.

Another fantastic thing about The Somerset is the option to host a tented wedding on their lawn. This is truly a unique because a tent gives you the opportunity to really do anything with décor. I always say that a tent is like an empty canvas.

Mayakoba, Mexico: A Great Option for Destination Weddings

Mexico is making a resurgence. With the reports of violence and Swine Flu, Mexico took some heavy hits on the tourism front. Most people were changing plans and canceling the location completely.

But now that things have calmed down considerably and the location is again welcome crowds by the dozens.

Mayakoba is a region on the rise that offers the high-end quality resorts of Cabo region on the East Coast. On a recent visit to the Banyan Tree, a new property in that Mayakoba region, you can see why this area is receiving rave reviews.The unique design of the property is appealing to many people.

This Eco-friendly resort area sits amongst a bird sanctuary allowing birds to live in their natural habitats throughout this entire property.

Among this place being beautiful... there are so many interesting things to do. Your guests will definitely be entertained! From snorkeling to ATV excursions to just tanning on the beach, Mayakoba offers something for everyone!
